Basics after installing WordPress :: Password, Tag Lines, Permalinks

Upon completing the set up you will be given a password and your user name is admin. It is important to write down or copy the password so you can log in for the first session.

Password
Rather than trying to remember the random text and number string it is better to change the password into something more memorable as soon as possible. Once you log in for the first time you should click on the Users tab to see the current list of users - currently just admin. Click on the edit option. You can edit a range of basic information including adding a nickname, your name, your site and AIM contacts, etc. At the bottom of this page you will find the Update User’s Password box. Simply enter your new password in both boxes and click the Update User button.

Personalized Tag Line
Upon completing the initial set up your blog will have the rather unfascinating sub-title Just Another WordPress Blog. To change this into a personalized tag line in the Administration Pages click on the Options tab and General sub-tab. Here you can set up such items as the Blog title, Tag line, WordPress address (possibly useful if you move IPs), Email address as well as Date style and Local timezone. Preparing your own Tag line and time zone are probably the most important options to begin with.

Permalinks Style
Permalinks are the URLs for your posts. There are several default options available, but none are really that useful at Search Engine Optimization (SEO). SEO is the practice of improving rankings in search engines to ensure your site will be seen in the right places. It is a very rubbery practice and is always changing as the search engine algorithms change. However, basic SEO is relatively simple and effective even when search engines change. One of the basic ways is to include your post title in the URL. The preset URL is very uninteresting: http://www.jpgoth.com/?p=3

This is a very boring and uninformative URL for a search engine. However, if you manage to provide a title accurately reflecting the page’s contents then the search engine will take notice that the terms in the URL are of some importance. There are a number of options available in WordPress that allow you to provide additional terms, such as post name, category, etc. into the structure of the URL.

This can be done by going to the Permalinks sub-tab under the Options Tab. There are several pre-set options available, but you can also create your own structures using code available here.
The link structure chosen for this site place an emphasis on the post title and category, then date information: /%postname%/%category%/%year%/%monthnum%/%day%/.

This changes the URL to the much more informative:

The change makes life easier for search engines and the people who use them as the URL helps define the content of the page.
