As I sit down at my computer contemplating what to write about I must say I am impressed with the ease-of-use that WordPress has been. The entire process took less than 20 minutes and now I have a space to call my own. How this was done:
-
Download a zip file from WordPress.org
-
Unzip the zipped file and re-zip it to remove the “WordPress” sub-directory from the installation – essentially you want to move all files located in the “WordPress” sub-directory on the zip file to a directory on your hard drive then zipping up the files located within the sub-directory (otherwise you will have the base page looking like http://www.jpgoth.com/wordpress instead of the much cleaner http://www.jpgoth.com/ base page.
-
Upload the re-zipped version up to the hosting service
-
Unpack the file online
-
Set up an SQL database (noting the settings of course),
-
Then run the start program, and after a short installation process JP Goth, the world according to Jorg P. Gothenberg III is online. This took the most time for my system because I had to edit the config file myself rather than just using the automated process that works for most hosts - ho hum.
It could be done a little faster on better equipped systems or slower on others, but the basics of installation are usually straight forward.
Now that the initial blog has been set up and ready for me to start writing (as I am doing now) and looking at the many add-ons (bells and whistles) available for WordPress which I will be doing in a few minutes.
I won’t pretend that WordPress is king of the Blogosphere, but it performs admirably enough and has a very large user and developer base.
